Custom mug printing in Singapore is one of the most popular corporate gift choices — practical, daily-use and carrying your brand on every desk in every office. But not all mug printing is the same. This guide explains the printing methods, what makes them different, and what to prepare.
Sublimation mug printing — how it works
Sublimation printing is the premium method for ceramic mug printing. A special dye-sublimation ink is printed onto transfer paper, then applied to the mug under high heat and pressure. The heat causes the ink to convert from solid to gas (sublimate) and bond with the polyester coating on the ceramic surface.
The result: the ink becomes part of the mug surface itself, not a layer on top. Unlike vinyl decal or pad-printed mugs, sublimation prints won’t peel, crack or fade with washing — they are permanently embedded in the ceramic coating.
ExpressPrint uses sublimation printing for all custom mug printing — the 11oz white ceramic is the Singapore standard for corporate gifting.
Sublimation vs vinyl decal vs pad printing — which lasts longer?
Sublimation — ink embedded in the ceramic surface. Will not peel, crack or fade. Dishwasher-safe. The most durable mug printing method. Used by ExpressPrint.
Vinyl decal — a printed vinyl sticker applied to the mug surface. Lower cost, but the decal can peel or lift over time, especially with repeated washing or dishwasher use.
Pad printing — a flat ink transfer process used for simple 1–2 colour logo printing. Economical for large quantities of single-colour logos, but cannot reproduce full colour photography or complex gradients, and is less durable than sublimation under repeated washing.
Is a custom printed mug dishwasher safe?
Sublimation printed mugs from ExpressPrint are dishwasher safe. Because the dye is embedded into the ceramic’s polyester coating during the sublimation process, the design is permanent and unaffected by the heat and detergents of regular dishwasher cycles.
Note: dishwasher safety applies specifically to sublimation-printed mugs. Vinyl decal mugs and pad-printed mugs are typically hand-wash only — the decal or ink can be damaged by dishwasher heat and cleaning agents.
What can I print on a mug?
Sublimation printing supports:
- Full colour logos with gradients, shadows and complex colour combinations
- Photography — portraits, product shots, event photos
- Wrap-around designs — artwork that covers the full circumference of the mug
- Individual personalisation — unique names, messages or images per mug (variable data)
- Brand patterns, textures and backgrounds
The one limitation: sublimation only works on white or light-coloured mugs with a polyester coating. It cannot be used on dark mugs, metal mugs or mugs without the polyester coating. For all standard 11oz white ceramic mugs, sublimation is the appropriate and most durable method.
