Digital Printing vs Offset Printing Singapore — Which Is Right for Your Job?

Digital printing and offset printing are the two main printing technologies used in Singapore. Most buyers don’t need to understand how they work — they just need to know which one is right for their specific job. This guide explains the practical differences clearly.

What is digital printing?

Digital printing transfers ink directly from a digital file onto the print surface — paper, card, synthetic material — without any intermediate plates. Think of it like a very high-quality office printer, but with commercial-grade colour accuracy and substrate handling.

The key characteristics of digital printing:

  • No setup cost — no plates to make, no minimum quantity requirement
  • Fast turnaround — ready in 1–3 working days for most products
  • Variable data possible — each piece can be different (unique barcodes, names, codes)
  • Economical for small quantities — typically under 500 pieces
  • Slightly lower colour consistency than offset at high volumes

At ExpressPrint, digital printing is used for short-run booklets, digital flyers, express business cards and other products where speed or low quantity is the priority.

What is offset printing?

Offset printing uses physical printing plates — one per colour — that transfer ink to a rubber roller, which then rolls the ink onto the paper. The name comes from the ink being “offset” from the plate to the rubber to the paper.

The key characteristics of offset printing:

  • Setup cost — plates need to be made for each job (this cost is amortised across quantity)
  • Longer setup time — typically 3–7 working days before production
  • Superior colour accuracy — consistent Pantone matching across large print runs
  • Economical at scale — cost per piece drops significantly as quantity increases
  • Widest paper and material options — offset works with the broadest range of stocks

At ExpressPrint, offset printing is used for high-volume flyers and brochures, business cards, booklets and other products where colour consistency at volume is the priority.

Digital vs offset — the practical decision

The decision comes down to three factors: quantity, timeline and colour consistency requirement.

  • Under 500 pieces: Digital almost always wins — cheaper, faster, no setup cost.
  • 500–2,000 pieces: Either works. Offset may be cheaper but takes longer. Digital is faster but slightly higher cost per piece.
  • 2,000+ pieces: Offset is almost always cheaper per piece and produces better colour consistency.
  • Need it in 1–3 days: Digital only — offset cannot be set up that quickly.
  • Pantone colour matching required: Offset is the right choice for exact brand colour reproduction.
  • Variable data (unique codes, names per piece): Digital only.

When in doubt, the price calculator on each ExpressPrint product page will automatically show you the right technology for your quantity — digital products and offset products are listed separately, so the pricing already reflects the correct method.

What about UV inkjet printing?

A third technology worth knowing about is UV inkjet — used by ExpressPrint for all large format printing including posters, rollup stands, buntings and flags.

UV inkjet prints onto a much wider range of materials than either digital or offset — including PP, PVC, canvas, metallic film and hologram. The UV ink cures instantly under LED light, requiring no lamination and producing a scratch-resistant, durable finish straight off the machine. ExpressPrint uses the Mimaki UCJV300 Series UV-LED printer for all large format work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between digital printing and offset printing in Singapore?

Digital printing transfers ink directly from a digital file — fast, economical for small quantities, no setup cost. Offset printing uses physical plates — superior colour consistency, cheaper at high volumes (500+ pieces), longer setup time.

Which is cheaper — digital or offset printing in Singapore?

For small quantities (under 500 pieces), digital printing is almost always cheaper because there’s no plate setup cost. For large quantities (2,000+ pieces), offset printing is typically cheaper per piece. The price calculator on each ExpressPrint product page shows the most cost-effective option for your quantity.

What is short-run printing?

Short-run printing refers to digital printing for small quantities — typically under 500 pieces. See Booklet (Short Run) and Loose Sheet (Digital) at ExpressPrint for instant pricing.

Can I get variable data printing in Singapore?

Yes — variable data printing (each piece with unique information like barcodes, QR codes, names or serial numbers) uses digital printing technology. Available on selected products at ExpressPrint. Contact the team via live chat to discuss your variable data requirements.
