Canvas tote bags have earned a permanent place in Singapore’s corporate gifting, event merchandise, and retail packaging landscape. They are practical, reusable, and carry a brand wherever they travel. At ExpressPrint, our canvas tote bag printing covers everything from simple one-colour logo prints to full-surface photographic designs.
The appeal of canvas tote bags as a branded item is straightforward: they get used repeatedly, they travel through public spaces, and they communicate values — particularly around sustainability and quality — in a way that a plastic bag or disposable packaging cannot. For brands that want their name and logo to keep showing up after the initial interaction, a well-made canvas bag is one of the most cost-effective vehicles available.
But not all canvas tote bags are equal, and understanding the differences before you order saves money and disappointment.
Canvas weight: 8oz vs 10oz vs 12oz
Canvas fabric weight is measured in ounces per square yard. The three most common weights for tote bags in Singapore are 8oz (light), 10oz (standard), and 12oz (heavy). The differences are significant in terms of feel, durability, and print quality.
8oz canvas is lighter and softer, folds compactly, and is cost-effective for high-volume orders — event giveaways where price-per-unit is a primary concern. The trade-off is that it feels insubstantial compared to heavier options and is less durable for regular use over time.
10oz canvas is the standard for most corporate and retail applications in Singapore. It has a solid, quality feel without being heavy, takes screen printing and digital printing well, and is durable enough for years of regular use. This is the default weight for most ExpressPrint canvas tote bag orders.
12oz canvas is the premium option — noticeably heavier, more structured, and more durable. It is appropriate for retail brands where the bag itself is part of the product experience, premium event merchandise, or any application where the bag is expected to last for many years.
Print methods for canvas tote bags
Screen printing is the standard method for canvas bags and the most cost-effective option for mid-to-high volumes (typically 50 pieces and above). It produces vivid, durable colours that wash and wear well. The limitation is that each colour in the design requires a separate screen, which means setup costs accumulate with complexity — a 4-colour design costs more than a 1-colour design, and gradients and photographic images are not practical with screen printing.
Digital direct-to-garment (DTG) printing is available for designs with full colour, photographic images, or complex gradients. It is more flexible than screen printing but typically more expensive per unit at higher volumes, and the durability over many washes is slightly lower than screen printing.
Heat transfer printing is used for designs requiring precise colour matching or metallic effects. It is a good option for premium corporate gifts where the finish quality needs to be exceptional.
Alternatives to consider alongside canvas
Depending on your use case, a non-woven bag or an RPET non-woven bag may be worth comparing. Non-woven bags are lighter, lower cost, and available in a wide range of colours — they are the standard for supermarket reusable bags and high-volume event distributions. RPET bags are made from recycled plastic bottles and carry a sustainability narrative that resonates strongly with certain audiences. Canvas has better tactile quality and a more premium positioning, but at a higher price point per unit.
Design note
Canvas is a textured fabric, not a smooth print surface. Fine details and small text can lose definition in screen printing on canvas. Keep your design elements bold and your minimum font size at 10pt or larger. If your logo contains very fine lines or small text, request a physical sample before committing to a full run — this is especially important at the 8oz weight where the fabric texture is more pronounced.
ExpressPrint tip
ExpressPrint’s canvas tote bags are available in standard and custom sizes with multiple print method options. If you are ordering for a corporate event or gift programme, talk to us about minimum quantities and lead times — canvas bag production typically requires more lead time than paper-based products, so plan at least three weeks ahead for standard orders.
