1) Colour discrepancies

Colour discrepancies usually arises due to printer calibration and artwork preparation.

a. Printer Calibration
For CMYK process printing, our acceptable standards is within 10% of the original intended colour.

Colour discrepancies will occur within the same print run (Eg. The colour of each individual printout in a single print run may differ from each other by up to 10%)
Colour discrepancies may also occur in separate print runs of the same artwork on separate occasions (Eg. When reprinting a print job using the same artwork used previously, colours may also differ by up to 10% even though the same artwork is being used.)

Below are 2 illustrations to illustrate the possibilities of 10% difference in colour.

Supposed the intended colour is the square highlighted with a black border, the 8 squares surrounding it are the acceptable limits in the final product. Each square adjacent to the selected square differs from the actual colour by 10%.

Printing Tip:
To minimise colour errors, in artwork preparation, select minimal colours possible. It is easier for a colour made up of all 4 colours (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) to run off the intended colour than for a colour that is made up of 2 colours (Eg. Yellow and Magenta, Cyan and Black... Etc...)

b. Artwork Preparation

Artwork Colour Mode:
In artwork preparation, the only acceptable mode for printing is in CMYK mode. We will not bear responsibility for colour discrepancies should the artwork be prepared in other colour modes other than CMYK mode.

Commonly, the default image mode in most design software is in RGB mode. RGB mode is meant for monintor display. However, for printing purpose, only CMYK mode is accepted. As such, for artwork submited in RGB mode, it will be converted to CMYK mode. As a result of the conversion, usually the printed colour will appear more dull.

Some companies or designers create artwork with Pantone Colours to retain colour consistency. This is only possible when Pantone Colour Printing is used. By default, we use CMYK process print for all print jobs. . Hence, artwork created using Pantone colours has to be be converted to CMYK mode, and this usually will cause the colour of the print out to differ from the desired colour. Unless specified, we assume all orders to be normal CMYK process print. Pantone Colour Printing is usually a custom order.

Printing Tip:
Make a conscious effort to set the image mode to CMYK mode prior to creating the artwork. Otherwise, it will be time consuming to realise the error only after the arwork is done up, or worse, the artwork is printed.

Overprint
Overprint is a result of artwork created using too dark colours. To be more specific, should each colour (namely Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) carry a weightage of 100% each, the maximum of the sum total of the 4 colours will be 400%.

For our production, our maximum permissable percentage is 250%. (Ie. C+ M + Y + K should be less than 250%) Should any artwork be found to be above 250%, overprint may occur.

Overprint is the phenomenon that occurs to a print job, when printed out, too much ink is used and resulting the printout not able to dry in time. As such, the final print out may appear 'smudged' or 'dirty'.

Printing Tip:
Look out for the dark colours in the artwork and check that the total percentage of the 4 colours is less than 250%. Use a photo editing software to 'lighten' up areas which is above the permissable limit.

For a 'Solid black' colour to be printed, set the colour to:

K = 100%, C = 50%, Y = 0%, M = 0%

2) DIrty Spots

At Expressprint, we have a stringent Quality Control team to ensure that the prints are not dirty. However in the event dirty prints go unnoticed, we will reprint the order should the erroneous printout be reported to us within 3 days of delivery of the product.

We will reprint only if there are 2 or more dirty spots of 0.5mm diameter or more within a square inch.

3) Trimming Error

Trimming error usually occur where insufficient bleeding is given or wordings being placed too near the edge of the artwork.

Do refer to our artwork creation support page here for more information.

We allow a trimming error of up to 1 - 2mm from the original intended crop area.
